I’ve always been fascinated with colors and how they have the ability to transform our moods and emotions. As a decorative painter and faux finish artist, I was often asked to help clients with color selections in their homes. It was always interesting to me when a client would ask, “what color should I paint this room?” Because color is a very personal choice, I would spend quite a while talking with clients and helping them determine which colors they resonated with, which colors made them feel peaceful, which colors made them feel energetic and yes, which colors gave them that gut reaction of ‘ick’!
Whether we’re adorning our bodies or our homes, color is a key element in making us feel good. Color has the power to uplift or bring us down. I’ve never subscribed to the current trends in color for either fashion or home design. Again, color is a very personal choice. And I have to admit, I tend to be a bit fickle – passionate about all the rich Autumn colors one minute and then suddenly I’m yearning to add purple to my life! I prefer neutral colors on my walls – most of the living space in our home is various neutral plaster finishes and my studio walls have a plaster finish with a charcoal grey glaze that is a great backdrop for just about any color. My wardrobe is the same, I lean toward neutrals and solid colors. By keeping things neutral in both my home and my wardrobe I can switch things up by changing accessories and it doesn’t require a complete overhaul. You’ll probably notice that my jewelry designs tend to be monochromatic. I like the casual elegance of just one or two coordinating colors – and rather than stealing the spotlight, the jewelry lets YOU shine!
I was completely captivated by an article I recently came across, Find Out Your Color Crush and Learn a Life Lesson. I just love the concept of having a ‘color crush’ – what a fabulous term! The article was very insightful as to color symbolism and what our current color crush may be teaching us.
My current color crushes are indigo blue and turquoise. I just can’t get enough of this combination and have added it to my wardrobe and my home. There is something so soothing and yet refreshing about the deep blues mixed with the brighter turquoise. According to the article, indigo blue is telling me to start listening to and trusting my intuition and also to take time to meditate. Right on target as I’ve been trying to incorporate meditation into my daily schedule and I often tend to second guess myself. I’ve also added some deep violet accents in my studio – creating an unexpected and delightful combination with the turquoise – and according to the article violet will help stretch my imagination!
I’d love to know about your summer color crush and how it makes you feel!
